Nature is an endless circle. Four seasons, life, death, high and low tide, you know: that sort of analogy. Enviro-Bear 2010 might be the first game to add the roundabout to those well known symbols. It is, in its own words, a game with a bear in a car. But it is far more than that. It is a futurist manifesto about the relation between nature and technology. And, well, about nature using technology to run over and eat nature. While the basic rules of nature and technology stay intact (hibernation, can’t go into reverse when the car is still moving forwards, food makes you fat), it shows how easily this delicate equilibrium can tip over, creating the worst of two-front wars possible: Nature using technology to fight nature using technology (Two bears in two cars) – with the underlying eternal struggle of nature vs. nature underlying (badgers, food).

Also, bears don’t normally have such flexible and long arms, else they could easily reach up to trees and grab the honey without having to climb clumsily – parking their cars on the hiker’s parking and going home to the city for hibernation.

Old Man Bill went missing! And his mansion in the desert with inanimate things that talk nonetheless is oh-so-lonely now. A good thing Harold The Talking Picture Frame had the idea to establish a trans-dimensional window to your computer, so you can go and look for Old Man Bill. The Strange And Somewhat Sinister Tale Of The House At Desert Bridge is a properly absurd and well-written adventure, which is, suprisingly enough, not created with Adventure Game Studio.

Through your transdimensional socket connection, you now begin to interact with the desert world. The cute crayon graphics, the beautiful music by Helen Trevillion and the excellent writing build a very atmospheric world you don’t want to leave easily. I had to force myself to quit and write down some lines to communicate this to you, fellow reader! Oh, yes, and TSASSTOTHADB (as insiders call it) is also an adventure game which features one of my all time favourites: A well-filled bookcase. Seriously, you should play the game for the bookcase alone.

And aren’t they adorable, trying to recollect their simplified Shakespeare lines? Preschool Theater Director puts you in the challenging role of the guy who tells the kids when to do what.

How should he greet the inquisitive prophet? By admitting that he despises flattering pants? But, oh no, this has only earned him a punch in the well-programmed face!

At least he learned more about limousines that way. But to explore limousines is profane! What now? Should he tell them he shrinks from trumpets? Or he avoids chanting? Too much information for poor robot…and off he went to robot jail. Yes, try to avoid robot jail. That’s about the only thing you can easily state in that game.

Cartonman, Cartonman, he’s what others throw away! The world’s first recycled superhero entered the stage roughly some ten years ago, but never gets old. And he never dies. You can punch him forever in his carton ribs, he’ll get reconstructed from leftover boxes in no time. Save the city from tools! Save the city from cakes!

Biodegradable, recyclable, invincible, hyper sexy. And, since he is a french robot: He can dance the funky carton dance. Yes, that’s about it. What’s sad about it: He requires Shockwave to save cities and be recycled, which is a file format that itself is not really recyclable and most likely not biodegradable and will give you sad headaches on almost every modern personal computer. The rise and fall of Cartonman…

Two interstellar travellers, a man and his dog (it seems to have become a quite common custom to take your pets on interstellar rides, if I might add), land on an alien planet. After a short conversation they encounter the first inhabitants, and, as it is also custom for interstellar travellers, fire their guns while some crazy funky music is playing and eradicate.

Soon the strangers make their way to the planet ruler, an unsightly creature. With an evil grin (at least as far as our two interstellar friends remember), he asks them: “Have you met my children yet? Hahahaha!”

Jan Willem Nijman and Jonathan Barbosa Dijkstra have built a nice little tale here that is bound to teach you some things about yourself, about humanity, and, above all, about the butt-ugly word shmup.

Tired of gaming away the day just to kill some time? How about gaming and at the same time helping cure AIDS? In fold.it, you have to solve puzzles by folding proteins. Originally it has been designed as an application that is run by a global computer network (you’ve certainly heard or read about distributed computing), but the more complex the structures got, the more errors showed up, proving that a complex matter like protein folding can not be completely calculated by even the most advanced software.

Eventually, its developers decided to rely on human genius: They released the software as a puzzle solving game, and now thousands of people can invent new proteins, enzymes or antibodies that could – one day – cure diseases, help decompose toxic waste or dissolve carbon dioxide. And you really want to go on playing Tetris?

Do you like candy? Yeah, me too! But did you know that it had to be mined from candy orbs of different sizes and qualities? Did you know that there is sorrow flavoured candy that doesn’t really taste all that good? And that chocolate is really a veritable danger for candy miners? Yes, Sugarcore teaches you all that.

To successfully mine the candy, you have to rotate the candy orb, so your candy mining projectiles will hit only the best and tastiest candy – but beware, don’t try to mine it all at once by hitting the core of the candy orb – horrible things will ensue!

Now, to keep you happily mining along, Gregory Weir has crafted a level mode in which you meet a good natured miner, a candy-hating duchess and, finally, a general who instructs you in the war for your nation’s most important natural resources: Candy.

Trouble, trouble everyday. But worry not, little heart – for in this game you have been equipped with a defense ray and have been given the possibilities to upgrade your stats after each wave of successfully held off woes. Yes, and the woes are of a most fiendish kind. They start off harmless and easy – no need to shed tears, little heart. But soon you have to realize that woes and worries are ever growing, the further you go, the harder it becomes. Now, isn’t that a lovely metaphor for life itself?

Well, basically it is a standard shooting game with a static player character that can buy upgrades and with enemies that are getting stronger each level to raise the challenge. But that static player character is a heart, and it is your task to keep it going, to blow the blues away. And also the mean reds, as in “Hold Off Red“.

Intriguing title, although the game is exactly what the title promises. This is an introspective 2D platformer, with a main character who is alone. He is pondering switches, flowers, walls and forcefields. The levels are built like diaries, the somewhat grave soundtrack, combined with the Victorian era clothing of the main character add to the somehow moribund nature and atmosphere of the game. The formal language stays that of a standard platform game. Switches, flowers, walls and forcefields.

Now, what makes the game special isn’t so very special at all anymore, but still special enough to mention: You have to interact with your past self. You are so alone that nobody but yourself can help you. The Company Of Myself. Braid showed us how possible that is, yes. It is nicely implemented, though, the dialog keeps you playing, and soon you will be stacking your current selves on top of your past selves that have faded away for the good cause.
